Many people think that cleaning is simple: the more product you use, the better the results; everything should be washed often; and if something looks clean, then it is clean. But experts say that many of these beliefs are wrong and, in some cases, even make the house dirtier, wasting time and money.

1. The more product, the better the cleaning

This is one of the most common mistakes. Overuse of detergents and cleaning products leaves residue on the surface, which traps dust and dirt. Instead of being cleaned better, the surface gets dirty faster and requires repeated cleaning.

Whether it's laundry detergent, dish soap, or floor cleaner, the recommended amount is usually sufficient.

2. If it looks clean, it is clean.

Appearances can be deceiving. A surface may look clean, but still be covered in bacteria or invisible grease.

Kitchen counters are the most typical example. Just spraying and wiping immediately is not enough to eliminate germs. Visible dirt must be removed first and then the disinfectant must be used according to the instructions.

3. Disinfectants work immediately

Many people spray the surface and wipe it immediately. This way, the product doesn't have time to perform its disinfecting function.

Disinfectants require a certain amount of time to work, usually from 30 seconds to several minutes. The surface must remain moist during this time.

4. More detergent means cleaner clothes

This is also a myth. Too much detergent doesn't completely clean during rinsing and creates residue on clothes and in the washing machine.

As a result, clothes can smell unpleasant, become stiff, and lose their freshness. Modern detergents are concentrated and work with small amounts.

5. Natural or homemade cleaners are always safer and better

The fact that a product is "natural" does not automatically mean that it is more effective or safer.

For example, vinegar can damage some surfaces and doesn't disinfect as well as many people think. Homemade cleaners can be useful in certain cases, but they're not the ideal solution for every situation.

6. Clothes should be washed after every use.

Unnecessary washing wastes water, electricity and detergent.

Jeans, sweaters, and many other garments can be worn several times before needing to be washed, as long as they aren't dirty, sweaty, or smelly. What's more, washing them less often helps clothes last longer.

7. Sponges are always full of bacteria

The problem is not the sponge itself, but using it for too long.

Sponges should be disinfected regularly or replaced every one to two weeks. They can be cleaned in the dishwasher or put wet in the microwave for about a minute.

8. Paper towels are the best way to clean windows

For cleaning mirrors and windows, microfiber cloths give much better results.

They capture dust and dirt better, leave fewer stains, and can be used many times. A slightly damp microfiber cloth is usually the ideal choice.

9. The product is more important than the technique

Many people believe that the secret to cleaning lies in the brand of the product. In reality, the method of use matters more.

Using the right amount, letting the product act for the necessary time, and using the appropriate tools make the biggest difference.

10. It's okay if frequently touched surfaces are cleaned only occasionally

Door handles, light switches, remote controls, telephones, and other surfaces that are constantly touched are among the places where the most germs accumulate.

Their cleaning should be done regularly and not just when we remember randomly. These areas are often overlooked, although they are among the most important for daily hygiene.
