Depression often doesn't start with strong, obvious signs, but rather with small changes in the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Often these signals go unnoticed for a long time, until the condition becomes more severe.
Here are 4 unexpected signs of depression that don't feel like depression at all:
Sign #1: You no longer have an opinion about anything.
It's normal to sometimes not have preferences, but when this becomes your usual state, it can be a hidden sign of depression.
Not having an opinion means, in a way, suppressing your expression. Often this comes from the fear of rejection: we think that if we express ourselves, we will not be accepted by others, so we choose to remain silent.
A 2024 study showed that "silencing yourself" is inversely related to depression: the more you keep it inside, the harder it becomes for others to understand who you really are.
So, a person often starts saying: "It doesn't matter to me," but in reality, there is a great conflict inside him. And as time goes by, he doesn't even know who he is anymore.

Sign #2: You no longer care about what used to matter
Saying "I don't feel sorry" often seems like indifference, but sometimes it's a way to suppress your real feelings.
When we use this expression without thinking, we are essentially telling ourselves that our desires don't matter. But deep down, we still care, we just don't express it anymore.
This creates an internal conflict: on the outside we appear calm, but on the inside we are blocked.
According to some specialists, people with depression often lose touch with their inner voice, the one that tells us what we really feel.
Sign #3: You no longer know what you really want.
When we say this, it seems like the truth, but it is often the result of long-term suppression of our desires.
From childhood we learn what is “good” and what is “bad,” and many of our desires begin to seem wrong to us. Thus, we hide them so deeply that we no longer hear them.
A 2023 study found that in some people with depression, areas of the brain associated with decision-making and goals are less active. This makes it harder to figure out what you want and go after it.

In reality, desires still exist, they are just covered by many layers of fear and self-judgment.
Sign #4: You start to feel like everything is meaningless.
When we lose touch with our desires, emotions, and thoughts, we begin to feel like nothing has purpose.
It's not that meaning doesn't exist, but that it's been covered up by emotional exhaustion and disconnection from oneself.
Many people with depression describe this as "living on autopilot," as if they are simply watching their life from afar, without really being a part of it.
Depression often doesn't start with a big moment, but with small signs that we ignore. When we don't express our thoughts, feelings, and desires, we begin to disconnect from ourselves. And in that disconnect, we gradually lose the sense of being alive. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult emotional time, it's important to seek professional help.
