For most of us, the airport is a mandatory stop between two destinations: a coffee before the flight, some time in duty free, queues, security checks, and waiting at the gate.
But some airports are changing the way we see these spaces. With impressive architecture, natural light, green spaces, and a design that is closer to an urban center than a classic terminal, they are becoming landmarks in their own right.
Prix ??Versailles, the initiative that evaluates some of the best contemporary architectural projects in the world, has published the list of the most beautiful airports for 2026. Among the seven selected airports, only one is located in Europe: Terminal 3 of Frankfurt Airport, in Germany.
The airports selected by the Prix Versailles for 2026 are:
1. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Terminal 3 – Guangzhou, China
2. Frankfurt Airport, Terminal 3 – Frankfurt, Germany
3. Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport, Terminal 2 – Guwahati, India
4. Navi Mumbai International Airport, Terminal 1 – Navi Mumbai, India
5. Techo International Airport – Phnom Penh, Cambodia
6. Pittsburgh International Airport – Pittsburgh, USA
7. San Diego International Airport, Terminal 1 – San Diego, USA
According to Jérôme Gouadain, secretary general of the Prix Versailles, contemporary airports have become inescapable signs of the time and place they are in. They are innovative because they try to resolve a difficult tension: on the one hand, travel has become more frequent and airports must operate quickly and efficiently; on the other, travelers are looking for more humane, accessible spaces that are more valuable for the time they spend there.
Gouadain adds that airports can no longer be seen simply as transit zones. With their impact on the territory, on architecture and on the way people and cities connect, they are becoming attractive spaces and symbols of economic, cultural and social developments that will shape the societies of the future.
