If you've ever experienced heartbreak, you're not alone. Some romantic memories linger even after years. Perhaps a song you heard by chance or an old photo can bring back feelings you thought you'd left behind.
A 2011 study by researchers at American universities analyzed the biggest regrets in life among 370 adults, aged 19 to 103. The results showed that almost half of the women had the same type of regret: a love story that didn't come true or a person who was lost in their life.

Romantic regrets were more common among women
Regrets related to romantic relationships were the most common, especially among women. About 44% of women surveyed reported romantic regrets, while only 19% of men gave the same answer.
Also, single people were more likely to think about past disappointments compared to those in new, stable relationships.
Most of those who spoke about lost loves referred to a familiar theme: the person who could have been the ideal partner, but who for various reasons did not remain a part of their lives.

Stronger regret for missed opportunities
Researchers noticed that people were almost evenly divided between two types of regrets:
Repentance for the actions they had committed.
Regret for the things they had not done.
However, those who regretted not doing enough to save or pursue an important relationship tended to hold onto this feeling for much longer.
According to researchers, distant regrets are usually related to missed opportunities and the questions "What if...?", while more recent regrets are more often related to concrete actions that the person would like to change.

How to deal with this kind of regret
Psychologists point out that regret is an unpleasant emotion, but it can also have a useful function. It can help people better understand their choices and make wiser decisions in the future.
The healthiest approach is to accept feelings, learn from them, and move forward without remaining stuck in the past.
Every relationship, even when it doesn't end the way we wanted, can serve as a valuable experience for personal growth. Often, what seems like a missed opportunity is eventually realized to be the wrong path.
