Katie Holmes Just Broke a Major Fashion Rule and Her Bag Is the 'Culprit'

Katie Holmes doesn't seem to worry too much about the unwritten rules of fashion.

On September 28, the 47-year-old actress was photographed during an evening in Paris with her boyfriend, Jason Bard Yarmosky, as they attended the party organized by French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld for the launch of Paris Fashion Week.

After traveling through Italy, the couple continued their European adventure in Paris, where Holmes chose a combination that at first glance seemed elegant and simple, but there was one detail that immediately caught the eye.

She paired a white feathered skirt and sparkly shoes with a black knit top and a baggy jacket. But instead of a small evening bag, she carried a large, bright red leather bag.

And this is precisely where the "violation" of the rule lies.

Traditionally, a large leather bag is not considered the most appropriate choice for an evening out. For such occasions, smaller, more elegant bags are usually preferred, while larger bags are more associated with daytime, work, or travel.

But Holmes showed once again that fashion rules are not necessarily meant to be followed.

The large red bag gave the look a strong contrast, while the simple sweater, loose jacket, and large bag made the feathered skirt look more wearable and less like an outfit worn only for special occasions.

Instead of the skirt being the only part that drew attention, the more common parts of the outfit made the combination seem more natural and easier to imagine even outside of the red carpet.

This is one of the reasons why Katie Holmes' style continues to look so fresh: she's not afraid to mix sophisticated pieces with simpler, more practical outfits.

And the big red bag seems to have become one of her favorite choices this fall.

In September alone, Holmes has been seen sporting the same bag in a few different combinations. Earlier this month, she wore a large red bag with baggy jeans and a classic white shirt. Later, she paired it with a soft knit ensemble and shiny leather ballet flats.

Now, in Paris, she showed that such a bag can easily transition from day to evening wear.

Instead of treating the large bag as an accessory that only belongs during the daytime, Holmes made it part of an outfit for a fashion event.
