We all like to make a good impression, whether on a first date, a job interview, or just chatting with friends. But psychologists say there's one speech habit that can instantly make you less likeable, even if you don't realize you're doing it.

It's called " humble-brag ," which is when someone tries to brag by hiding their pride behind a complaint or a false form of modesty. Instead of sounding humble, the message is often perceived as arrogant.

According to psychologist Golee Abrishami, the phrase that annoys people the most is the one that starts with: " I felt really embarrassed when... ". The reason? Because it's usually followed by something that, in effect, is a boast.

For example:

"I felt very embarrassed when I won the award in front of the whole class."

"I felt embarrassed when I couldn't find a place to park my new car."

Psychology explains that people expect to hear a sincere moment of vulnerability, but instead they get a disguised way of showing off their success. This creates distrust and makes the person less likeable.

These phrases can also have the same effect:

"I find it very annoying when..." (e.g. "I find it very annoying when I get several job offers at once.")

"Everyone tells me I'm very smart, but I'm not..."

"I was doing this activity long before it became a trend."

According to experts, the problem isn't being proud of your achievements. On the contrary, it's better to talk about them openly than to hide them behind complaints or feigned modesty.

Remember, people connect more with those who are authentic. So if you have something to celebrate, say it sincerely. Chances are, it will make you much more likeable than a "masked brag."
