A handful of almonds may be one of the simplest habits to improve your health. According to a new study, consuming about 45 almonds a day may bring significant benefits to heart, metabolism and gut health, especially in people suffering from metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is a combination of factors that significantly increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It is diagnosed when a person has at least three of these problems: excess fat in the abdominal area, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low "good" cholesterol (HDL), and high triglycerides.

According to researchers at Oregon State University, poor diet and lack of physical activity are among the main factors contributing to this condition, while chronic inflammation and poor gut health may also play a role.
To test the effect of almonds, researchers conducted a 12-week experiment with people aged 35-60 who had metabolic syndrome.
One group consumed about 320 calories in the form of almonds (approximately 45 kernels) each day, while the other group ate peanuts with the same caloric value, but without the healthy fats, proteins, and micronutrients found in almonds.
The results were clear.
People who consumed almonds showed:

Increased levels of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.
Reduction in total cholesterol.
Lowering LDL cholesterol ("bad cholesterol").
Reduction of waist circumference.
Improving gut health and reducing inflammation.
Why are almonds so beneficial?

Almonds are rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, fiber, polyphenols, magnesium, potassium, copper, and biotin. Just 28 grams of almonds provide about 50% of the daily requirement for vitamin E, making them one of the best natural sources of this antioxidant.
Vitamin E helps in the normal functioning of organs, muscles and the nervous system, and can also contribute to reducing blood clotting.
According to researchers, the combination of all these ingredients seems to positively affect metabolism and overall health.
If you're not allergic to nuts, experts suggest that one or two handfuls of almonds a day can be a smart choice as a snack, especially for those who want to protect their heart and reduce the risk of metabolic diseases.
