Archaeologists are uncovering thousands of years of history beneath the square of Notre-Dame Cathedral, where they are digging up to 4 meters deep as part of a project to turn the area into a greener, cooler space by 2028.
Beneath the surface, remains from the medieval period, earlier structures and an ancient Roman quarter have been found, along with hundreds of objects such as ceramic vessels, goblets and a fourth-century coin bearing the image of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great.
Work will continue to uncover even earlier traces, while the project aims to create a more heat-resistant square with around 160 trees, without damaging the historical heritage hidden beneath.
