Olivia Wilde is looking back on her marriage to Italian prince Tao Ruspoli, more than a decade after their divorce. In a new interview, the actress revealed that the decision to get married at 19 was, in fact, a form of rebellion.
"It happened at Burning Man. The decision to get married was made there, and I believe there was a ceremony at the festival," Wilde said during the latest episode of the "Call Her Daddy" podcast.
She explained that the official documents were then completed in Los Angeles.
"We did the paperwork in Los Angeles with a person I think we found on the internet. He came, we signed some papers that probably don't even have legal validity," she said with humor.
However, it wasn't long before Wilde began to question the decision he had made.
“At first I thought: 'Okay!' And immediately after that: 'What did I do?' Because even then I had a tendency to make spontaneous decisions. That's one of the beauties of youth, but it often got me into difficult situations,” she recalled.
The actress revealed that before meeting Ruspoli, she had not seriously thought about marriage. Tao is the son of the late Prince Alessandro Ruspoli.
"It seemed like the craziest thing I could do and at the same time incredibly romantic. It was so unexpected and crazy that I thought, 'Yeah, let's do this completely unpredictable thing.' Of course my parents reacted with, 'Oh my God!'" she said.
Wilde admitted that one of the main motives was the desire to rebel.
“Since I could do whatever I wanted, my way of rebelling at that time was to do something very traditional,” she said.
However, according to her, the marriage was not traditional at all.
"It was very bohemian and I'm grateful for that experience," the actress added.
Olivia was only 25 years old when she and Tao divorced in 2011. Fortunately, their separation happened without major conflicts.
"It wasn't a dramatic breakup. It was just the moment when we realized we had grown up and were at completely different stages of life," Wilde said.
Today, the relationship between them is good.
"It's funny now, because we're friends. It feels like it happened a hundred thousand years ago. It's unbelievable," she concluded.
