After the success of " Oppenheimer ", Christopher Nolan returns with one of the most ambitious projects of his career: " The Odyssey ", the cinematic adaptation of Homer's epic poem. The film centers on the story of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, who tries to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War, where his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and their son Telemachus (Tom Holland) await him.
Unlike many of Nolan's previous films, where the main characters were motivated by the loss of their wives, this time Penelope is alive and becomes the main reason for Odysseus not to give up on his long journey home.
The film follows a non-linear structure, a characteristic element of the director. The story unfolds through flashbacks, as Odysseus, stranded on the island of the nymph Calypso (Charlize Theron), tries to regain his memory and recount his adventures. In Ithaca, meanwhile, dozens of suitors seek Penelope's hand, convinced that the king will never return. Among them, the character played by Robert Pattinson stands out.
Although "The Odyssey" is a story filled with gods, monsters, and magic, Nolan opts for a more realistic approach. The goddess Athena, played by Zendaya, appears from time to time to guide Odysseus, while the fantastical elements are treated with restraint and realism. Even iconic moments, such as the transformation of the soldiers by the sorceress Circe (Samantha Morton) or the confrontation with the Cyclops, take on a darker and more intense atmosphere.
Visually, the film is one of the most spectacular of the director's career. Shot entirely on 70mm IMAX cameras , it offers magnificent views of sea voyages, battles, and the fall of Troy. Ludwig Göransson's music accompanies the film with a dramatic rhythm, while the scenes of the Trojan Horse are considered among the strongest moments of the entire production.
Matt Damon's performance has been hailed as one of the best of his career. He portrays a weary Odysseus, weighed down by regret and memories of war, while Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland convincingly tell the story of a family that has spent decades apart.
The cast also includes Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page and John Leguizamo, who give the film new emotional dimensions.
