James Handy, a popular supporting actor who rose to fame for his roles in the films "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Jumanji," has died after a stabbing in Los Angeles. He was 81.
According to authorities, the actor was allegedly killed by his partner's 44-year-old son, Michael Gledhill.
Police were called to a Tarzana-area residence Wednesday morning after a person called and declared, "I'm the son of man, I just killed the man of sin."
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Handy unconscious in the front yard of the home, with multiple stab wounds to the chest. He was immediately transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to police, shortly after the incident, Michael Gledhill approached officers himself and told them he was the person they were looking for. Authorities said he lived in the same apartment as his mother, the actor's partner.
The motive for the attack is still unknown. Gledhill has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held on $2 million bail.
James Handy began his acting career in 1977 and over the course of his decades-long career, he has amassed nearly 150 film and television roles. He has appeared in such popular series as "Quantum Leap," "NYPD Blue," "Beverly Hills, 90210," "The X-Files," "The West Wing," and "Alias."
In cinematography, he starred in the films "Taps", "Arachnophobia" and "Logan". The public especially remembers him for the role of the insect exterminator in "Jumanji", while his most recent appearance on the big screen was as the bartender Jimmy in "Top Gun: Maverick", alongside Tom Cruise.
