A video of a 7-year-old Palestinian boy from Gaza, who suffers from a severe vision problem and cries in despair over his broken glasses, has attracted the attention of millions of people on social media and international media.
Ayoub Junaid's footage has highlighted the difficulties faced by many visually impaired children in Gaza, who, due to the Israeli blockade and the devastation of the war, are unable to undergo eye examinations, obtain suitable glasses, or undergo specialized surgical procedures.
After the video was viewed by tens of millions of people, Ayoub got a new pair of glasses. However, this does not solve his main problem, as he urgently needs surgery.
His mother, Eman Junaid, 30, displaced with her family to the port area of ??Gaza City, says that her son's problems began when he was just two years old.
"Ayoub suffers from very severe myopia since an illness accompanied by a high fever. Doctors told us that his vision would gradually improve over the years, but the opposite happened. The number of glasses he needs continued to increase, and the lenses he needs today are not available in Gaza," she says.
The family was preparing to send him for treatment outside the territory, but the outbreak of war interrupted everything.
According to his mother, Ayoub rarely leaves the tent where the family lives. When he wants to play with his brothers, sisters or other children, he holds on to his glasses tightly and moves very carefully. He doesn't run, jump or move freely like his peers.
Doctors have warned parents to avoid strenuous physical activity, as a fall or blow could further damage the retina.
Ayoub often asked his mother why he was different from other children.
"Why don't other kids wear glasses like me? Why can't I move like them? Why can't I go to school like them?" are the questions he constantly asks.
In late April, while walking with a relative on a road littered with rubble, he fell and hit his face on the ground, breaking his glasses.
"He burst into tears, rolled on the ground and tried desperately to put the broken pieces back together. For Ayoub, those glasses were everything. Even with them, he can't see clearly and often has to bring objects very close to his face to distinguish them. Without them, he can hardly move at all," his mother says.
Family members say the days without glasses were incredibly difficult for him. For three or four days, he spent most of his time in a corner of the tent, unable to move without help from others.
