The French National Assembly has adopted an amendment aimed at removing the terms "mother" and "father" from child school registers and other documents. This change requires that "mother" and "father" be replaced with "parent 1" and "parent 2" as a form to avoid discrimination against same-sex parents.
The amendment reads: "In order to prevent discrimination, school registers, class registers, parental authority and all other official departments should mention only parents 1 and 2."
The amendment was strongly supported by the social-liberal party La République En Marche , founded by Emmanuel Macron. However, some French conservative MPs disagree with this decision. Republican Party deputy secretary-general Fabien Di Filippo described the amendment as a "frightening ideology." Other right-wing MPs agreed with the idea that the removal of words "mother" and "father" is "dehumanizing".
Numerous Twitter followers raised the problem of how the division would be, so who will be parent 1 and parent 2.
For the first time, such an amendment, which could still be rejected by the French Senate, was mentioned by government officials in 2013 when marriage was legalized within the same genus.
