For the first time in history, a woman wins the prestigious award

For the first time in history, a woman managed to win the prestigious Abel Prize, which was awarded to people with great achievements in the field of mathematics.

(Abbreviated Abel Prize is a prestigious award nominated in honor of Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel and is considered to be the most important in this field after the Nobel Prize.)

Karen Kesklo Uhlenbeck from the University of Texas in Austin will receive the annual award for outstanding contribution in this field.

This award, awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, was set as a way to address the Nobel laureate gap that does not have a mathematics category.

"Karen Uhlenbeck wins Abel's award for her fundamental work in geometric analysis, which has changed the mathematics landscape widely," said Hans Munthe-Kaas, chair of the Abel Committee.

Karen Uhlenbeck will be awarded the Abel Prize at a special ceremony on May 21 in Oslo, where the Norwegian Royal King Harald V. attends the ceremony to award the prize.
