Third, Fatos Nano broke the taboo in the early 2000s when he declared separation from Regina, after 27 years of marriage and two grown children and a relationship with Joanna, a girl 20 years younger than him. Regina was a high school sweetheart and the politician's first wedding ceremony was simple and held in her father's house. The second, which shocked public opinion, was held in November 2002 at a club in Tirana with over 300 guests. After that, the couple and close friends headed to Golem where they celebrated their marriage. Fatos Nano legally adopted Joanna's son from a previous marriage.
