Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants and according to numerous studies they help in the fight against cancer, diabetes and heart disease. However in some specific cases there may be negative consequences, which you will find explained below.
1. May cause allergies
Allergies are one of the most negative side effects of pomegranates. Although rare, they are life-threatening. The main symptoms are itching, swelling, stomach pain and sore throat. In some cases, they may be associated with difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat and tongue, and anaphylactic shock (a life-threatening condition caused by an allergic reaction).
What to do if you face allergies: First , stop eating pomegranates. You should contact your doctor, but take some precautions in advance. If symptoms include an exacerbated skin condition, do not irritate the area; do not wash it with soap or water as it may cause irritation. You can gently apply a skin oil, which helps maintain skin moisture. Wear cotton clothes.
2. May cause reaction if it comes into contact with some drugs
Another side effect of pomegranates is the dangerous interaction with different medicines, so consult your doctor if you can consume pomegranates while taking medicines. Some of them are: amitriptyline, desipramine, fluoxetine, tramadol and others.
3. May lower blood pressure
Studies have shown that pomegranates can lower blood pressure, and that's good news for many. However, for those with uncontrolled blood pressure fluctuations, it is advisable not to consume pomegranates. Likewise, pomegranates can cause problems during surgery, so avoid them at least two weeks before a scheduled operation.
