Just before the start of a new decade that will undoubtedly bring new challenges, the Pantone Color Institute announced the color of 2020: PANTONE 19-4050 Classic Blue, a soothing dark blue.
The awful tonality reminds us of the timeless and the classic; sky at dawn, a serene suit, quiet lakes or a bowl full of blueberries.
The selection of Classic Blue for 2020 has even more significance when we remember that the first color of this tradition in 1999 was the blue, a muted tonality that represented the emotions of the new millennium and soothed the anxiety that preceded the year 2000. Impact purple that year touched every area of life, ranging from furniture trends to haute couture; for reference, you can revisit the scene where Miranda Priestly at The Devil Wears Prada explains how a single color dominated a global industry.
So it's no surprise that at the end of one decade and the beginning of another, Pantone returns to the blue family, especially one year ago, which will bring challenges, fears, and hopes.
"Both now and then [1999], there is the same sense of worry for the world, so based on what is happening across cultures, we chose Pantone 19-4052, Classic Blue, for the color of 2020," he tells Time Laurie Pressman, Vice President of Pantone Color Institute. "It's a relaxing spice, full of calm and confidence. Encourage rapprochement. ?
Pressman said color emphasizes support, trust, integrity and consistency, all of these traits that are valued in stressful and rapidly changing situations. Also, the color resembles the sky at dawn, which explains why so many people were quietly forgiven.
"The sky at dawn - it's not night blue, it's thinkable, but not dark and mysterious," she said. ?It represents our reception. When you think of heaven at dawn, you know that the day is not over. Thinking about what to expect in the future. It calms but also provokes thoughts. It highlights our desires for a solid foundation upon which we can cross the road to the new decade. The time we are living in requires faith and confidence. We all see the same blue sky and feel the same. ?
And indeed, color is best suited for this period of our lives; tonality has no gender or season, and can be accessed by anyone, regardless of age. In addition, indigo can easily be achieved with plant sources and inks, coinciding with the current ecological movement.
Some may associate the classic blues with the past, but it is also contemporary; looks beautiful in a pullover by Off-White, looks beautiful in a traditional suit by Ralph Lauren.
"We're going back to the classics because the world is in chaos," Pressman said. "But we're not doing what we were doing then, we're reinterpreting it."
