For Irish electorate voters, this situation resembles a badly done romantic comedy, but Hollywood has no place here. At least still.
Holly Cairns, a Social Democratic candidate, is competing against her partner, Christopher O'Sullivan, a Fianna Fail candidate to represent the Cork South-West constituency.
"We go a long way with each other, but in terms of politics, not so much," Cairns told the Irish newspaper Echo. ?All is allowed in war and love. I'm ready."
Cairns was elected years as a member of the Cork County Council for Social Democrats, a small leftist party. O'Sullivan also won for Fianna Fail, a centrist party. He became chairman of the council.
Although affiliated, the respective parties selected them to compete to represent Cork South-West.
"Even though I knew we could compete against each other, now that it seems to me like I'm in a badly done romantic comedy," Cairns told Echo.
O'Sullivan declined to be interviewed. Cairns also declined to talk about the race, but focused on health reform.
This story can really end up being a movie. The constituency needs three representatives and can win both.
