The Prime Minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, has been re-registered as a doctor and will join the medical staff to help them in the battle against coronavirus pandemic.
Reuters confirmed that Varadkar was again included in the doctor's register in March with the aim of working directly with patients and assisting other doctors.
"Many of his family and friends work in medicine. He wanted to help a little bit, "a spokesman for the Irish prime minister told Reuters.
Varadkar graduated from Trinity College of the School of Medicine in 2003 and worked as a doctor for seven years before focusing full time on politics. He was removed from the Iralnda doctor's register in 2013.
The head of Ireland comes from a family of doctors. His parents are a doctor and a nurse, respectively, and his partner, Matthew Barrett, is a cardiologist, while Varadkar's sisters and their husbands also work in healthcare.
Last month, Simon Harris, Ireland's health minister, announced a campaign to recruit health professionals who had given up the profession. "Your country needs you," was the message of the campaign. More than 50,000 people applied within a few days.
Ireland has 5,000 confirmed cases. 158 people lost their lives and 25 were cured.
