What Are Blue Areas?
The Blue Zone is a non-scientific term given to the geographical regions where some of the oldest people in the world live. The term was first used by Dan Buettner, who was studying different parts of the world to see in which areas people live longer. They are called the Blue Zone because when Buettner and his colleagues were looking for these areas, they drew them in blue on the map.
Why do people in the Blue Zones live longer?
Genetics somehow determines our longevity and adaptation to chronic chronic diseases in old age, on the other hand, lifestyle also matters. People in the Blue Zones have fewer chronic illnesses at a later age, thanks to a rich diet and lifestyle.
What are the Blue Zones?
1. Icaria, Greece: An island in Greece where people eat a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, red wine and homemade vegetables.
2. Ogliastra, Sardinia, Italy: The Sardinian region is home to some of the oldest men in the world. They live in mountain villages where they usually work on farms and drink red wine.
3. Okinawa, Japan i: Okinawa is home to some of the oldest women in the world, who eat soy-based foods and practice tai chi, a form of meditation exercise.
4. Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: Their diet is based on corn beans and tortillas. People in this region usually do physical work.
5. The Seventh-day Adventists, Loma Linda, California: Religious Group. The people of this community are strict vegetarians.
