The origin of the zodiac dates back to about 2500 years ago, when the Babylonians divided the sky into 12 different sections, corresponding to the 12 months on the calendar. They studied a visible connection between the placement of constellations in the sky and the movement of the Sun and, thus, created the 12 signs. The Babylonians also saw the constellation of Ophiuchus, but since they could not fit it into any of the 12 divisions, they decided to leave it outside the zodiac.
