Since the beginning of the film industry, many of them have been banned from showing in certain places, for example, "Fifty Shades of Gray" is banned in Cambodia, while "After Death" has been banned for 10 years in Albania.
The following list includes films banned by the US government. Some of them have been allowed to be seen years later, some others are still banned. However, in the age of the internet, it is not difficult to find anything.
- The Last Temptation of Christ (1998)
Martin Scorsese's film about the life and death of Jesus Christ received a great deal of criticism, especially from Christian believers. The "Last Temptation of Christ" describes Jesus as someone with lustful thoughts, feelings of fear, doubt, and sometimes hopelessness, which many regarded as a "contradiction" of the Bible. Protests by religious groups make the film last only a few weeks.
- Birth Control (1917)
Sex education activist Margaret Sanger wrote, directed and starred in this film, which relates to her efforts to expand birth control opportunities for women. The project only appeared once to 200 people, and then the New York Licensing Commissioner banned it, calling it "immoral, indecent, and contrary to public welfare."
- Titicut Folliw (1967)
- Hilary: The Movie (2008)
In 2008, then-Senator Hilllary Clinton was running in the US election. In the same year, a documentary about Hillary's life was released, which was banned from airing. The problem? A law in force, the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Law, did not allow the publication of such materials during a campaign. Republicans thought of the documentary as propaganda. However, the film sparked discussions about the law, which was subsequently amended.
