The 48-year-old, Yumi Yoshino, admitted on Wednesday, January 27, that she has kept her mother's body at home for 10 years.
For a decade, Yoshino has been hiding the victim in the refrigerator in an apartment in Tokyo.
Police detained him on "suspicion of abandoning and hiding a body".
The 48-year-old denies raping or killing her mother, but says that when she died, she hid her body because she was afraid she would be forced to leave the apartment where they lived, as "they would evict her".
The mother, who is thought to be around 60 years old when she lost her life, was rented an apartment in a municipal housing complex.
Yoshino was forced to leave the apartment in mid-January after failing to pay the rent. A cleaner discovered the lifeless body in the house.
According to reports, the autopsy is not yet able to determine the exact time and cause of death of the woman.
