Netflix has just released the documentary about the infamous Los Angeles hotel, the Cecil Hotel, and the mysterious death of Elisa Lam, who was staying there.
The 19-storey hotel first opened in 1927. After the Great Depression, the area in which it was located became a popular space for homeless people and sex workers, and the once thriving business hotel now had decline.
With links to serial killer Richard Ramirez and a string of tragic and mysterious deaths in the building (including Elisa Lam), the hotel quickly took the nickname "Hotel Death" and, in fact, served as the inspiration for several series of "American Horror Story: Hotel".
Despite the dark past, guests still continued to stay in the hotel, as it was an economical place for tourists and people with little money, or simply because tourists did not know the history of the hotel. Many others stayed in the hotel for rent, for a longer time.
What about the Cecil Hotel now?
For now, Hotel Cecil / Stay on Main is not open because renovations are underway. Once they are finished, it is likely that the hotel will continue to operate normally.
In 2007 it sold for $ 26 million and later, part of Cecil was renamed "Stay on Main". In 2014, the hotel was bought by hotelier Richard Born, who paid $ 30 million for it. It was then closed in 2017 for a full overhaul and has not yet reopened.
It is planned for a major change, including the addition of a gym, a new lounge and a pool on the terrace.
The renovations were expected to be completed in 2021, but the coronavirus delayed this process.
