There is a place on Earth that can be considered the place of magic and rainbow miracles - and science proves it.
Steven Businger, an atmospheric scientist, published a study on why Hawaii is the country with the most magnificent rainbows on the planet. "The cultural significance of rainbows is reflected in the Hawaiian language," says the author, an atmospheric scientist at the University of M?noa, "which has many words and phrases to describe their diversity."
The main ingredients for rainbows are rain and sunlight. To summarize the process briefly, light enters a point of water, reflects from the inside of said point, bends as it passes from air to denser water, splits into component wavelengths, appearing as different colors and voila: a rainbow.
Hawaii’s location in the subtropical Pacific means that the overall weather pattern is dominated by winds, frequent rainfall, and clear skies - the perfect conditions for rainbow formation.
In his paper, Businger describes other factors that influence the creation of the most beautiful rainbows on the planet. Due to the remoteness of the islands, the air is extremely clean and free of pollution, continental dust and pollen. This is another factor that contributes to the full spectrum of colors.
Hawaii is actually known as the state of the rainbow. In traditional mythology, rainbows are a significant element. In Businger's work, it analyzes how rainbows have become such an important part of Hawaiian culture.
