Officials in Taiwan beg people not to change their name to 'salmon',

Officials in Taiwan are begging people to stop changing their name to "salmon" after dozens made such an unusual move to take advantage of a restaurant promotion.

In a phenomenon labeled "salmon chaos" by local media, about 150 young people visited government offices in recent days to officially change their name. The cause of this sudden enthusiasm to change the name was a chain of sushi restaurants.

Through a two-day promotion, which ended today (Thursday, March 18), any customer whose ID card contained "gui yu" - the salmon alphabet characters - would have the right to eat a meal with five friends.

Taiwan allows people to officially change their name up to three times.

"This kind of name change not only wastes time, but causes unnecessary paperwork," Deputy Interior Minister Chen Tsung-yen told reporters. "I hope everyone can be more rational about this," he added.

"I changed my name to salmon and two of my friends did too," one woman told SET TV. "We will just change our names later."

Other salmon-themed names reported in the local media included "Salmon Prince", "Meteor Salmon King" and "Salmon Fried Rice".
