Why some babies are born with (too) hair, while others are not!

It is said that a woman who experiences heartburn during pregnancy will have a baby with a lot of hair. In 2006, researchers looked at this and found that out of 28 women who had heartburn, 23 of them had babies with long hair. Doctors believed that hormones released during pregnancy could also control the growth of baby hair. However, the reasons for this may be several.

- Genetics

While experts are not 100% sure why some babies are born with hair and some do not, they believe that genes and DNA may play a role. Usually, hair growth occurs around the thirtieth week of pregnancy. If a baby starts to grow hair from the abdomen, it is likely that he will be born with hair on the head.

- Maternal hormones

Hormone levels are high inside the womb, so they can help to stimulate baby hair growth as well. However, after birth, hormone levels drop significantly. This slows down the hair growth of a newborn.

- Is it related to the mother's nutrition during pregnancy?

Since different babies are born with different hair, some mothers may think that this is due to a lack of nutrients during pregnancy, or to the fact that the baby has not received enough calcium. In fact, none of this is true. Moreover, if the baby will have problems with iron, or something else, this will be indicated by other signs and not hair.

- Is it normal for babies to lose hair?

Most newborns lose little or all of their hair in the first 6 months of life. It is common for them to lose hair as a result of rubbing their head on the mattress. There will be less such friction once they start moving more, sitting down or just going through these habits.

- What is "lanugo"?

Lanugo is the hair that covers the body of some newborns. Fetuses develop lanugo around the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy and remove it around the sixth or seventh month. This means that it often disappears before the baby is born, but there are also many cases where the baby is born with it.
