Elon Musk told Saturday Night Live viewers that he has Asperger's Syndrome, shortly after appearing on stage as a special guest in the role of moderator on the legendary sketch show.
During the opening monologue, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla referred to himself as "the first person with Asperger who moderates SNL". This exit also marked the first time he talks about having Asperger's.
In fact, Elon is not the only one with Asperger syndrome who has moderated SNL, as even former cast member Dan Aykroyd moderated the show in 2003 and openly discussed his Asperger.
Asperger Syndrome (AS) is one of a group of neurological disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Asperger syndrome is at the soft end of the spectrum. Some people with autism spectrum disorders are classified as having high functioning. High-functioning autism means that these individuals do not have delayed language skills and cognitive development problems. Often, individuals diagnosed with Asperger syndrome have normal or above-normal intelligence. In addition, people with this syndrome are able to be educated and work.
Symptoms vary from person to person, but often have an obsessive focus on a topic of close interest, such as dinosaurs, train schedules, and so on. or the colonization of Mars, in the case of Musk.
The person with Asperger syndrome does not understand the other person's attempts to change the topic of conversation. This is one of the reasons that children with this syndrome have difficulty in social interactions.
People with Asperger syndrome can speak without displaying any facial expressions. They may also have difficulty with basic motor skills, such as running or walking. These children may lack coordination.
