Instagram is no longer a 'photo sharing app': What does that mean?

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, says that "the platform is no longer a photo sharing application".

In a statement on Instagram, he points out that "Instagram is now more than the place with square photos".

According to him, the main reason why people come to Instagram is "have fun" and the app, is not the only one that offers this entertainment at the moment.

"Let's be honest, there's a really serious competition right now. TikTok is big, YouTube is even bigger and there are a lot of other beginners," he said. So to stay in the game, Instagram will have to embrace this aspect and that means change! "

So how will Instagram change?

"At Instagram we are always trying to build new features that help you get the most out of your experience. Right now we are focusing on four key areas: Creators, Videos, Purchases and Messages," Mosseri said.

One of the ways the platform will be developed is by starting to distribute more recommendations, suggested posts. Another way things will change, Mosseri explains, is that Instagram plans to embrace videos more widely and focus on full-screen and comprehensive content. Basically, it looks like Instagram will become more like TikTok. Special attention will also be paid to purchases.
