The popular Barbie dolls have been criticized on social media in connection with the collection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Mattel, the toy company that makes Barbie dolls, partnered with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 organizers to publish a new line of dolls created specifically for the Olympics.
The collection includes five dolls that reflect the five new sports that were added to this year's Olympic program - baseball / softball, climbing, karate, skateboarding and surfing.
"Tokyo 2020 is a monumental event that unites the world through sport and inspires fans of all ages," Mattel said in a statement. "The Tokyo 2020 collection honors these sports and inspires a new generation through the Olympic spirit and outstanding athletic tradition."
Despite trying to "[highlight] inclusiveness and innovation," many people criticized the lack of a significantly Asian Barbie.
Numerous users are wondering how Mattel might forget to include an Asian Barbie for the Tokyo Olympics.
"Mattel makes #Asians invisible as he announces 'the most diverse line of dolls', highlighting an Asian country, displaying #Barbie in Japanese karate uniform and labeling each doll as 'Tokyo 2020 official'," he wrote. Japanese-American visual artist Drue Kataoka on Twitter.
