It is extremely common to feel anxious or insecure about the size of your penis. And this can be seriously complicated if you think the penis may have become smaller or if you think it will happen over time. Fortunately, if so, there is likely to be a perfectly reasonable explanation - and solution.
In a new video on her YouTube channel, pelvic urology and surgery, Rena Malik explains that the length of a penis can vary depending on a number of factors, including temperature, how high it is at the moment, and stress.
"When urologists measure the length of the penis, we measure it the same way every time," she says. "Typically, the instructions are to measure it in a 'weak' condition, at a stretched length, in a warm room."
Malik goes on to list four main reasons why the length of a penis may decrease over time, or why it seems like it happens, even if it does not:
"The number one reason why people think their penis is shrinking when in fact it is not, is because they have gained weight," she says. "In particular, they have gained weight which makes it harder to see the entire length of the penis."
The second case in which one might think his penis has shrunk, Malik continues, is when they have undergone prostate removal surgery.
"You may notice a considerable shortening of the length of the penis."
The third possible reason for a change in penis size is Peyronie’s disease. This is a condition where a raised plate on the penis causes it to bend or change shape.
"You will notice it because you will see a visible lump in your penis, or you will see that it is bending or curving in another way," says Malik.
The fourth most common reason is bodily fibrosis, where the penis loses blood flow, which also affects erections. This can be caused by health issues such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as micro-fracture damage suffered during sports or strenuous sexual activity.
