Could there be a psychopathy gene in your family?

As I lay in the hospital bed after giving birth to my first son, the first thing I thought was: Will my baby be normal? Or would it be like my mom and sister? Was it hereditary? I could only pray that my child would get rid of the personality disorder, which I would later recognize as psychopathy.

Early manifestations of psychopathic features

I remember over the years, my father, who generally had little to say, muttered, "Your sister is the bad seed." From my early childhood, I knew she was a problem and that my mom and sister were different from other people I knew. They both manipulated, distorted the truth, broke the rules and broke the laws. Both had similar personalities and both displayed psychopathic traits. Could this be the result of a genius in the family tree?

Professor Robert Hare's assessment of the "Weed"

Pioneering psychopathy researcher Professor Robert D. Hare has said that William March's best-selling novel, The Seed, is an "extremely real-life" portrayal of psychopathy in a child. 8-year-old Rhoda Penmark came from loving parents who were devoted to her. But as the story unfolded, others who knew him thought it "weird." The school staff noticed "a cold, difficult child, who lived by his own rules and not by the rules of others." She was a fluent and persuasive liar. Rhoda became a murderer and was indifferent to her crimes. Even though she never knew her grandmother from her mother, another serial killer - she still displayed traits that were similar to her.

My sister, like Rhoda Penmark, was cunning and courageous enough to manage to force her school boys to steal and give away their sisters's jewelry. She had no concern that what was given to her had been stolen. Her only wish was to keep getting what she wanted. My mother, amazed by her success, applauded.

Recent research on the inheritance of psychopathic traits

The sad truth is that psychopathy is a lifelong problem, with many symptoms appearing in youth. While efforts can be made for improvement, the disorder continues with much emotional, psychological, and physical suffering for those affected by psychopathy.
