Turkey is asking the UN to change its name

The Turkish government has sent a letter to the United Nations formally requesting that the country be referred to as Turkey, the state news agency reported.

The Anadolu Agency said that Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, confirmed the receipt of the letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavusoglu. Dujarric told the Washington Post: "It is not uncommon for us to receive such requests."

The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pressured the name internationally known as Turkey to be changed to Türkiye as it is written in Turkish. This change is related to the desire to have a name different from the turkey ("turkey" in English) and the negative connotations associated with it.

In December 2021, Erdogan ordered the use of Türkiye to better represent Turkish culture and values, including the requirement that "Made in Turkey" be used instead of "Made in Turkey" in exported products.

At the moment, it is unclear whether the name, with a letter that does not exist in the English alphabet, will spread widely outside of Turkey. In 2016, the Czech Republic officially registered the short name, Czech Republic, and although some international institutions use it, many still refer to it by its long name.
