Meme and nostalgia: People's reactions to the eventual closure of Internet

Microsoft announced it would shut down the old Internet Explorer browser, 27 years after it was first introduced in 1995.

Starting today (June 15) Internet Explorer will be disabled and users will be redirected to Microsoft Edge browser.

Internet Explorer was the "gateway" of the Internet for people born before Generation Z, in an era when Microsoft dominated the tech world, ahead of Google, Facebook and TikTok. Microsoft dominated the market due to the deployment of software as part of the Windows operating system.

Internet Explorer was often slow, and competition forced people to use other faster browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox or later Google Chrome.

However, despite the gradual decline of Internet Explorer, it is still well known worldwide. A survey by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in September 2021 found that the browsers people were most aware of were Google Chrome (95%), followed by Internet Explorer (85%), Firefox (81%), Apple Safari ( 80%) and Edge (69%).

People's reactions are a mixture of humor and nostalgia.

"Thank you for the memories."

"Farewells are never easy."

"Users of the '90s."

"Internet Explorer do të mbyllet përfundimisht nga Microsoft pas 27 vitesh. Faleminderit që na ndihmove të shkarkojmë shfletues të tjerë."

"Internet Explorer do të dalë në pension nesër (15 qershor 2022). Nëse jeni ende duke përdorur këtë shfletues, me siguri do ta merrni këtë lajm në 500 vitet e ardhshme."

"Why do I feel personally responsible for shutting down Internet Explorer?"
