Goodbye, Turkey!
The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has decided to officially change the name of the country, abandoning the old English version, which is often confused with the turkey.
"The word Türkiye represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values ??of the Turkish nation in the best way," Erdogan said.
International organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and NATO have already approved Türkiye following a formal request from the Turkish authorities.
Earlier, the Erdogan government pressured the name internationally known as Turkey to be changed to Türkiye as it is written in Turkish. This change was related to the desire to have a name different from the turkey ("turkey" in English) and the negative connotations associated with it.
Critics say the renaming is another populist tool Erdogan is using to divert attention from the country's ongoing economic woes and boost nationalist voters ahead of next year's elections.
