In the wake of the US Supreme Court ruling, Halsey is reflecting on the abortion that "saved her life".
The pop star, who has been open about her struggle with endometriosis and experiencing a miscarriage in the past, revealed she had 3 miscarriages before she turned 24 in an open letter to Vogue.
“One of my pregnancies required 'further care', a gentle way of saying I would need an abortion because my body couldn't completely terminate the pregnancy on its own and I was putting my life at risk. During this procedure, I cried. I was afraid for myself and I was helpless. I was desperate to end my life-threatening pregnancy.”
Halsey welcomed her first child, son Ender Ridley Aydin, with partner Alev Aydin in July 2021. Although this pregnancy was a beautiful experience, she says that "after past experiences, I was prepared for the worst."
"When Ender was born, the world fell silent. My body, which I had hated for years for routinely 'failing,' had done everything right," Halsey wrote. “The long chapter of my life and abortions was reduced to one page in that moment. It was simply divided into "before" this moment and all the things that would come after it. Years of blood, pain and misery from almost dangerous and unwanted pregnancies, then the euphoria of chosen motherhood."
She added:
"Many people have asked me if I have reconsidered my stance on abortion since I gave birth to a child after years of trying to do so. The answer is firmly no. "In fact, I've never felt more convinced about it. My abortion saved my life and paved the way for my son to have his."
