Noah Cyrus, Miley's younger sister and a young artist whose debut album will be released on September 16, has opened up about her addiction to Xanax during her teenage years when she started abusing with drugs.
Now in recovery, Cyrus said she tried Xanax — the brand name alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug that's part of the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines — when she was 18.
"My boyfriend at the time, when I was 18, was the first person to give me Xanax, and it kind of connected us more," she told Rolling Stone. "I think I wanted to fit in. with him. I wanted to be what he wanted and what he thought was cool and what I thought everyone else was doing. As soon as I felt it was possible to "shut things down" for a second and numb the pain, it was over."
Although she didn't mention him by name, her boyfriend at the time was rapper Lil Xan, who, as you might have guessed from his name, was also a heavy drug user. He revealed in 2021 that after trying to quit the drug, he had health problems and multiple convulsions.
Singer Noah, addiction put him to sleep during a press event.
"I couldn't keep my head up or my eyes open because I was gone, I was only there physically," she said. "That's how you get into a deep hole, from which it is difficult to get out."
When she lost her grandmother in August 2020, she realized that her drug use was preventing her from being fully present with her family, and it seems that's when she decided to seek help.
"I'm not trying to be a spokesperson for recovery or anything like that. I myself am just going through it and understanding it," said the 22-year-old. “I wake up in the morning and I'm able to look in the mirror and go about my day without hating myself. I am able to comfort and nurture myself.”
The album "The Hardest Part" is released on September 16.
