Sadness is trending: Why 'crying makeup' is viral on TikTok

A recent trend on TikTok is encouraging people to embrace makeup that looks like we've cried, with watery eyes and a red nose.

In a clip with over 500,000 likes and millions of views, creator Zoe Kim Kenealy offers a tutorial for "unstable girls" to achieve crying makeup , a type of makeup where we look like we've just finished crying.

"I want to look like I'm crying all the time," one person commented. "I feel very beautiful after crying," wrote another. "I can't tell if it's the long eyelashes or the red nose."

A është kjo tendencë krejt rastësore?

"In the current landscape, celebrities and brands want to be authentic, to appear real," she said. “One way to do that is to reveal a diagnosis or reveal a trauma. It's literally profitable to show some kind of vulnerability.”

According to her, the symptoms of post-traumatic stress - such as closing in on oneself, feelings of sadness, loneliness, etc. – are being treated as an aesthetic form. "It shows that people have problems now and social media is where they can find what they can't get anywhere else."

"Perhaps by showing sadness, you realize that other people feel the same way. You can make fun of it, but it gives you hope in a way,” Thelandersson said.
