You've probably heard it a million times from your friends, older sister, and even doctors: always pee after sex, or else you're at risk of getting a urinary tract infection (UTI).
But according to Dr. Tanaka Dune, urogynecologist, says there is no concrete scientific evidence that there is a significant link between UTIs and whether you urinate before or after intercourse. Which means that while it's perfectly fine to pee after sex, there's a good chance it won't do much besides relieve your bladder.
However, Dr. Dune says there are some women who feel the urge to pee after sex and have to, while there are others who can comfortably sleep or resume any activity after sex without peeing. If you feel the urge to urinate, you should definitely do it.
Dr. Dune says she suggests patients do what's most comfortable for them. She still advises that everyone practice good hygiene habits in general after sex. And if for some people that includes peeing, that's perfectly fine.
Meanwhile, other gynecologists continue to advise urinating after sex, explaining that during sexual intercourse, germs can come into contact with the urinary tract, a small opening just above the vagina. Urinating after sex helps flush out these germs. They say "if you don't urinate after sex, you could get a urinary tract infection (UTI) – an easily treatable but painful condition."
Dr. Tanaka Dune opposes the latter.
That said, you may still pee right after sex, but there's no need to feel guilty if you sometimes don't.
