More than 300,000 people voted for the Oxford Word of the Year for 2022. In first place was: Goblin Mode .
Golbin mode? What does it mean? Goblin Mode is a slang term that refers to an approach to reject societal expectations and live life in a disorderly manner, without regard for self-image.
Are you considering the manifestations of being the best version of yourself? Goblin Mode is the opposite. In the folklore of various peoples, "goblin" refers to small, grotesque and evil creatures. In social media, it now refers to people who live their lives by abandoning society's norms and embrace their instincts for a liberating experience.
"The term gives people the freedom to shed social norms and embrace new ones," said American linguist and lexicographer Ben Zimmer. "Given the year we've just had, Goblin Mode shows that we're all feeling a little overwhelmed."
In second place was the word "metaverse" - a virtual reality environment - while in third place was the hashtag '#IStandWith' - a hashtag used to express solidarity with a cause, group, person, etc.
