If you think Europeans drink too much alcohol, you're right: People across the continent consume more alcohol than anywhere else in the world.
Every year in Europe, every person aged 15 and over consumes an average of 9.5 liters of pure alcohol, which is equivalent to around 190 liters of beer or 80 liters of wine, according to the European health report 2021 from the World Health Organization (WHO ).
In 2019, the top 10 EU countries with the highest alcohol consumption per capita were the Czech Republic (14.3 litres), Latvia (13.2), Moldova (12.9), Germany (12.8), Lithuania (12.8), Ireland (12.7 ), Spain (12.7), Bulgaria (12.5), Luxembourg (12.4) and Romania (12.3).
The 10 countries that consume the least amount of alcohol in the region are Turkey (1.8), Albania (6.8) and North Macedonia (6.4). It is worth noting that these countries, except for North Macedonia, have a Muslim majority population, for whom the consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
