Ed Sheeran told "Rolling Stone" that he has suffered from depression all his life, but last year, all the negative feelings came to the surface. After the deaths of his friends Jamal Edwards and Shane Warne in 2022, Ed felt like he didn't want to live anymore.
The singer said he thought his ideas were selfish, as he is a father of two young daughters. He emphasized that he found strength in his wife, Cherry Seaborn, who encouraged him to get the right help.
"No one talks about the feelings in my country. People think it's strange to look for a psychologist in England. I think it's very helpful to talk to someone, to express yourself and not feel bad about what you say," he added.
Ed pointed out that help is not a button and you don't get better right away. It is a long and difficult process. "Help is not a button that you press and automatically you are okay. It will always be present and must be managed"-
His friend, Jamal, died of a heart attack in February 2022 after mixing cocaine with alcohol. Sheeran said the tragedy helped him overcome his addictions, which he started in his late 20s.
Then there was the death of Shane Warne, due to natural causes.
Shortly after Jamal's death, Ed learns that his wife was diagnosed with a tumor during pregnancy and that she could not be operated on without giving birth to a girl. "I felt so helpless. There was nothing I could do," said Ed.
His wife gave birth to a baby girl, Jupiter, and then underwent a successful operation.
All the feelings and challenges, Ed has expressed in his new album Subtract" and in the cover photo, it is the artist himself under water, thus signifying "the deepest and darkest thoughts". He talked about his pregnant wife's tumor, the death of a close friend and the trial in which he was involved.
"I worked with Subtract for a decade, trying to create the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what they would be like. Then, at the beginning of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health and as a result, the way I see music and art", said the singer.
Sheeran emphasized that this album symbolizes his emotions and the period when he felt like he was drowning. He showed that this creation is a window into the soul of the artist and an honest and true view of his life.
