An "American Idol" contestant has spoken out about Katy Perry and her comment which was deemed on the network as mom shaming – teasing, mocking or prejudicing mothers about their choices.
In an episode that aired earlier this month, 25-year-old Sara Beth Liebe competed by singing in front of Katy Perry and her co-stars Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
They were surprised at her age, insisting she couldn't be more than 16. When she discovered she was a mother of three, Katy jokingly jumped out of her chair and acted like she was about to faint.
"If Katy lays on the table, I think I'm going to pass out," Sara said. "Honey, you've been lying on the table too long," Perry said.
Laying on the table has different meanings depending on the context, but in this case, it seems that Katy is referring to Sara's decision to be a mother, implying that she has been resting for too long.
This comment caused strong reactions on social networks. Sara revealed that Katy's comment was not "very kind" and she felt "embarrassed" and "hurt".
"I just want to take this opportunity to say that I think it's really nice when women support other women and I think it's hard enough to be a mother and it's hard enough to be a woman," she said on TikTok. "I also wanted take this opportunity to say something to all new moms and moms in general... keep loving your babies. no one deserves to feel bad about it. i think if you are a good mom and you love babies yours, that's all that really matters. Other comments just don't matter."
