We're just a few months away from the highly anticipated Barbie movie, but what happened to what was originally thought to be the star of the movie?
It was Amy Schumer, the actress of comedy films, who was going to play the role of Barbie, a role that is now held by Margot Robbie.
The official Barbie movie has been in the works since 2009 and will be released on July 21st. "Barbie" was originally announced as part of a partnership between Mattel and Universal Pictures.
In 2014, the film moved to Sony Pictures. In 2016, reports surfaced that Amy Schumer would star as Barbie in the film, which she would also write.
Glamor reports that Schumer's original vision for the film was about a "girl who gets kicked out of Barbieland because she wasn't perfect enough."
However, at the time, Schumer's participation received some backlash from fans who felt the comedy was not "appropriate" for Barbie.
Months after her involvement in the film was first reported, Amy Schumer began to distance herself from the production.
She officially left the film in March 2017. In a statement, the actress said:
"Unfortunately, I'm no longer able to commit to Barbie due to some scheduling conflicts. The film is promising, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I'm bummed, but I can't wait to see the end of 'Barbie.' "
According to reports, Schumer allegedly wanted Barbie to be a serious inventor in the film and was unhappy when Sony suggested that Barbie could invent a pair of gelatin high heels.
The actress later told The Hollywood Reporter that "they [production companies] didn't want to do it the way I wanted. It was the only way I was interested."
In 2018, the film moved to Warner Bros. Pictures to be directed by Greta Gerwig. In July 2019, it was announced that Margot Robbie will play Barbie.
