Dangerous trend on TikTok: 13-year-old girl dies

The family of a 13-year-old Australian girl who died as a result of chroming has called for urgent action to prevent similar deaths from happening.

Chroming is a new trend on social media that involves inhaling toxic chemicals found in aerosol products such as deodorant or bug spray. This trend first appeared in 2009 and has recently made a comeback on TikTok.

Esra Haynes died after inhaling fumes from a deodorant bottle and suffering a cardiac arrest on March 31. Doctors said her brain was severely damaged and could not be recovered.

Two boys, both 16, died doing this dangerous trend in 2019, according to The Straits Times.

Esra's parents have urged schools to make students aware of this dangerous practice and are lobbying for a safer, less toxic deodorant formula.
