South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, has died.

Lee was found dead in a car in a central Seoul park on Wednesday. Lee, 48, was found after his wife reported to police that he had left the house and she had found a note, which appeared to be a suicide note.

He had been under investigation by the police on suspicion of using marijuana and other psychoactive drugs. Lee was questioned three times by police, including 19 hours over the weekend. The actor had said that he was cheated by a lady of a bar, who then tried to blackmail him.

South Korea has tough drug laws, and drug crimes are usually punishable by at least six months in prison or up to 14 years.

A graduate of South Korea's National University of Arts, Lee made his acting debut in 2001 in a TV sitcom titled Lovers. He became best known for his portrayal of the wealthy patriarch in director Bong Joon-ho's Best Picture winner at the 2019 Oscars, Parasite.

He is survived by his wife Jeon Hye-jin and two sons.
