Why do we feel the need to change our hairstyle?

Stressful events inspire us to change our appearance. In 2007, Britney Spears walked into a salon and decided to do her hair "zero". This came after she was denied custody of her children and people thought of it as a cry for help.

Rebecca Newman, a psychotherapist, says: “When we go through a period of change that is painful for us, we tend to make decisions that offer us immediate relief. We want to free ourselves from strong emotions." Newman adds that changing physical appearance can feel like removing a layer of skin, which makes us feel better.

It is normal to go through physical changes after stressful experiences. It is an attempt to build a special kind of self. This may involve changing our image to fit who we want or need to be.

Hair is often seen as a symbol of beauty for women. Other reasons why we feel the urge to cut our hair:

1. The need for control over our lives

When we feel powerless over external situations, making a decision like cutting our hair can give us a sense of control.

2. New beginnings

Often, a haircut symbolizes a new beginning. This could be after a breakup, a loss, or a significant life experience.

3. Desire to express yourself

Changing our appearance is a way of expressing the internal changes that are happening to us. A new haircut can represent our personal evolution.

4. Emotional relief

Physical change can help us release pent-up feelings and feel freer.

5. Identity and personality

Hair is an important part of our identity. A change in hairstyle can reflect changes in how we see ourselves and a desire to represent ourselves differently to the world.

Therefore, the next time you feel a strong desire to change your appearance, remember that this can be a way to manage your emotions, express yourself or start a new chapter in your life.
