"Simmer": This new dating trend is like no other

In the modern dating world, where everything seems to be moving fast, a new trend encourages people to slow down and enjoy the process. Known as "simmer" dating, this new approach focuses on taking time for every aspect of the relationship. From the first message to the first date, this trend addresses everything to create a meaningful connection that develops slowly, without too much pressure to rush to establish a "nomenclature" of the relationship stage.

While dating apps and social media often promote instant gratification, this type of trend offers a new alternative for those who prefer to nurture relationships gradually.

But what might be the impact of this slower approach on long-term relationship success?

Sonal Khangarot, licensed rehabilitation counselor and psychotherapist at The Answer Room, says, "Simmer dating, or taking a gradual approach to romantic relationships, is consistent with core concepts for building a lasting relationship, such as emotional intimacy." and communication. These elements develop over time, and the trend provides a foundation that drives them.”

She goes on to add that over time, empathy and awareness grow, strengthening the emotional connection. Unlike modern dating trends that focus on instant gratification, simmer dating helps partners create a deeper and more lasting connection.

Improving communication and conflict resolution

Recent studies show a decline in the ability to concentrate, which impairs effective communication. A slower pace in meetings allows for active listening and a better understanding of each other's views and communication styles.

Khangarot says, "It helps individuals identify their conflict resolution strategies and apply them in a relationship, which helps create a healthy relationship."

These strategies include clarifying whether a partner wants opinions or simply to be heard during disagreements, thereby reducing conflicts and strengthening emotional bonds.

Possible disadvantages of the trend

The "simmer" meeting can sometimes be mistakenly seen as a process without a clear goal, says Khangarot.

"However, it actually provides a valuable space for exchanging ideas and assessing a partner's compatibility with long-term goals."

This gradual approach, she explains, helps individuals be clear about the flow of the relationship and whether it is meeting their expectations.

"The trend provides a contrast to the often hasty conclusions drawn in fast-paced relationships, where decisions can be made without sufficient reflection."

Avoiding emotional stagnation

To prevent emotional stagnation and misunderstandings, Khangarot suggests that it is important for partners to be clear about their needs and desires.

"Open communication and offering constructive arguments/ideas are essential for maintaining a healthy relationship. This ongoing dialogue helps partners understand each other's feelings and expectations, addressing issues before they become major problems."

By maintaining this open line of communication, it confirms that both partners can avoid emotional barriers and ensure that the relationship remains fulfilling and in line with their shared goals.
