We like to pick the brains of experts when it comes to happiness. Because if they've achieved the elusive happiness factor into old age, they must have done something right, right?
12 experts - entrepreneurs, doctors, authors, real estate agents and more - revealed what habits we need to have to stay happy into our eighties and beyond.
If you can master these skills before bed, you will remain happy until your eighties:
1. Put on your pajamas!
Sure, what else can we wear, you might say, but the idea is to wear pajamas specifically for sleep and before bed. Nightgowns, simple cotton t-shirts – which you should only wear for sleep – send your brain the message that it's time to rest.
2. Set the table for tomorrow
Every night, set the table for breakfast the next day. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, just a tablecloth, plates, napkins, and glasses. The fact that you prepare yourself to sit down for breakfast sets the tone for how your day will go.
3. Use massagers for pain
Spend 10 minutes massaging your feet, ankles, and back before bed. Research has shown that they really reduce muscle fatigue and soreness, whether you're doing it after a tough workout or after sitting at the office all day.
4. Eat something small
Some smart moms used to give their kids milk and a cookie to send them off to sleep. Today, you can opt for a healthier version: 30 minutes before bed, pair protein with complex carbohydrates, dairy products like cheese or yogurt with whole grains. Their content is converted into hormones that promote faster and more restful sleep.
5. Dream with your eyes open.
During the day, you're so busy with other things that you don't see the big picture of your life. So at night when you're alone and relaxed, let your mind wander. This means cutting back on screen time, just being in your own quiet place until you naturally fall asleep, no matter how scary it may sound at first.
6. Watch things that make you nostalgic
Play YouTube videos of songs that bring back good memories if you absolutely must have some screen time before bed. This helps you reconnect with friends, family, and their memories from the past; which calms you mentally and physically and leaves you with a sense of positivity and peace.
