The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the recall of several popular creams manufactured by L'Oréal and Walgreens after tests revealed high levels of benzene - a substance known to cause cancer.
Should you be worried?
Although the products will be removed from store shelves and online platforms, the FDA has clarified that consumers do not need to return them, as the risk of developing cancer from their use is considered "very low."
Benzene is a chemical classified as a carcinogen and has been linked to several types of cancer, including leukemia and other blood disorders. The recall comes on the heels of another case in which the FDA ordered the removal of an acne treatment from the market by L'Oréal for the same reason.
What do these products contain?
The products in question contain benzoyl peroxide, a common ingredient in acne treatments that helps reduce bacteria on the skin. This ingredient is found in both over-the-counter and prescription creams.
While authorities have begun removing the products from sale, it remains to be seen whether there will be additional measures to protect consumers from long-term exposure to harmful chemicals.
